Common Condition

Educational information only. This content is not a substitute for professional medical advice. Consult our team for a personalized diagnosis and treatment plan.

A bony bump at the base of the big toe caused by a structural deformity that pushes the big toe toward the others.

When to See a Doctor

  • Symptoms that do not improve with rest after one week
  • Severe pain or swelling that limits daily activities
  • Visible deformity or unusual changes to the foot
  • Signs of infection: redness, warmth, or discharge

Common Symptoms

  • Visible bony bump at big toe base
  • Pain and soreness at the bump
  • Restricted big toe movement
  • Difficulty finding comfortable shoes

Treatment Options

We almost always begin with conservative (nonsurgical) care. Surgery is considered only if those measures don’t bring relief. Your plan is personalized after a thorough exam.

Conservative (nonsurgical) care

  • Wider toe-box, low-heel footwear
  • Bunion pads and toe spacers
  • Custom orthotics
  • Anti-inflammatory medication and ice
  • Activity modification (relieves symptoms and slows progression; does not reverse the deformity)

Surgical options (if needed)

  • Osteotomy (cutting and realigning the bone)
  • Exostectomy (removing the bony bump)
  • Arthrodesis (joint fusion)
  • Lapidus / Lapiplasty 3D correction
  • Minimally invasive bunionectomy

Risk Factors

  • Athletic or physically demanding lifestyle
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Poor-fitting footwear
  • Existing medical conditions such as diabetes or arthritis

Prevention Tips

  • Wear properly fitting supportive footwear
  • Warm up and stretch before exercise
  • Maintain a healthy weight to reduce foot pressure
  • See a podiatrist at the first sign of persistent pain
